The 2026 brAIn Hub AI Summit brought together leaders, educators, workforce professionals, businesses, and community partners from across the region to explore how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of education, workforce development, and industry. Over the course of two days, the Summit provided cross-sector conversations, practical hands-on learning opportunities, and relationship building to strengthen the region’s capacity to adapt to Artificial Intelligence.

The Summit welcomed 346 registered attendees into Kimmel Arena on UNC Asheville’s campus. There were a total of 53 speakers featured, including 4 keynote speakers who explored the opportunities and challenges of AI adoption and integration, from organizational implementation strategies to legal considerations affecting the music industry. Participants had access to 22 breakout sessions designed to showcase practical applications of AI across a variety of 5 different sectors: Education, Advanced Manufacturing, Technology, Media and Entertainment, and Healthcare.

The event’s success was made possible through the support of 30 partners representing public and private sector organizations, showing a strong regional commitment to collaboration across industries. Ticket sales and sponsorships generated nearly $40,000 to support Summit planning, programming, and the overall attendee experience.

UNC Asheville and NCInnovation were key partners in the process and execution of the Summit. Their contributions helped create an inclusive environment that encouraged participation and collaboration among higher education institutions, businesses, public agencies, and community organizations across Western North Carolina.

Bill Sederburg alongside the brAIn Hub 2026 planning committee also recognized five higher education leaders. This honor recognized creative, effective, and ethical applications of artificial intelligence designed to improve educational outcomes or institutional services.

One of the strongest aspects of the Summit was the opportunity for networking and relationship-building. Attendees connected with professionals from education, business, government, healthcare, workforce development, and technology sectors. These conversations created new partnerships and strengthened existing ones, reinforcing the importance of working together, as AI continues to influence nearly every industry.

The Summit also emphasized responsible and practical AI implementation. Breakout sessions provided examples of how organizations are using AI today while prompting discussion about workforce impacts, ethical considerations, and the supports needed for successful adoption.

A big thank you goes to Western Carolina University for hosting the Summit social event, which gave participants an additional opportunity to exchange ideas, continue conversations, and develop connections beyond the formal setting.

Looking Ahead

Save the date for next year’s brAIn Hub AI Summit: September 30-October 1, 2027 at UNC Asheville.

Future efforts will focus on expanding hands-on learning opportunities that allow participants to gain practical experience with AI tools and applications. Organizers are also exploring improvements to room capacity and logistics to accommodate growing interest, as well as specific learning tracks for beginner, intermediate, and advanced audiences.

There is also strong interest in expanding conversations around AI ethics, governance, policy, security, and responsible implementation. As AI continues to be integrated into more areas of daily life and business operations, these discussions will become increasingly important for organizations and communities across the region.

From a workforce development perspective, there is a desire to hear more directly from private businesses regarding how they are currently using or implementing AI and where workforce support may be needed. Understanding employer experiences will help inform the planning process that support both workers and businesses as Artificial Intelligence evolves.

Western North Carolina’s goal remains clear: to bring together K–12 education, higher education, public-sector organizations, workforce partners, and businesses to have a collaborative response to rapid change. By continuing to create opportunities for dialogue, shared learning, and responsible implementation, the region can better prepare its citizens for the future of work.

The momentum created during the 2026 brAIn Hub AI Summit provides a strong foundation for continued growth. The brAIn Hub looks forward to engaging with additional partners to helping Western North Carolina navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI.
