Asheville’s Economic Future Buoyed by Gains in Population, Workforce

In the economic outlook of most cities, Ted Abernathy argues there are winners and losers. Asheville, he says, is in the winner’s column, but that fact also presents its own set of challenges.

Data presented Thursday at the 18th annual Asheville Metro Economy Outlook show the region has seen growth in both population and jobs during the past five years. Six Western North Carolina counties, including Buncombe, each have seen their populations leap by 5.3 percent since 2011 while jobs have increased during the same period by 10.9 percent, both besting national averages.
